Program Overview

For boys 7 to 12, the adventure starts with Red Barn.   Our seven-week program offers many different outdoor activities, including hiking, canoeing, nature study, swim lessons, challenge course, crafts, archery, baseball, tennis, and fishing.

There is a pond for fishing and canoeing, a swimming pool, playing fields, recreation building, a shop for crafts, a nature study center, and a large pavilion.  We have indoor and outdoor climbing walls, and a low outdoor ropes course.

Camp outs are planned for the summer, sleeping in tents under the stars.  We offer short backpacking trips for older campers.  Campers are awarded weekly with certificates, and at the end of year campers may be recognized with a plaque for excellence in certain activities.

At the nearby Holden Arboretum the boys help build trails, clear paths and walks, and are introduced to the woods where they learn about our delicate ecology.

The campers take numerous hikes, where they practice bird and leaf identification, collect rocks for their rock collections, and search the streams for frogs and crayfish (don't worry - they must leave animals in nature, they won't bring them home!)

Red Barn still maintains a unique outdoor educational philosophy - there is no set schedule, and the boys plan their own day with the supervision of our staff.   Many of our counselors are teachers who have been with the camp for many years.   Our counselors strive to make their activity area the best in camp, so each program has its own development path.  Our camper to staff ratio is about 8:1.

Transportation and Day Camp Hours of Operation

Bus transportation is provided for our day campers from Congregation Bethaynu, 27900 Gates Mills Blvd., Pepper Pike. Buses leave town at 8:45 am. Buses return at 4:35 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Friday camp closes at 3:00 p.m. and the bus returns at 3:30 p.m. Parents must stay with campers until the bus arrives in the mornings. Campers are not to enter the building. It is our intention to have a counselor at the bus stop at 8:30 a.m. for added supervision. Final bus schedule will be made in the spring.

Lunch

Red Barn and Chincapin campers may buy a box lunch provided by a food service vendor.  The lunch fee is $20.00 per week ($4.00 per lunch).  Our lunches are prepared by our long-time and ServSafe Certified Camp Cook, Kandy Miller, and include a variety of main dishes, including pizzas, tacos, burgers.  You must enroll for the whole summer.  View a sample menu.

To Enroll

To enroll in Red Barn,

Step 1:  Complete the on line application form.  You can choose whether or not you want to pay by check or Visa.  After you complete the application form, Red Oak will email you your invoice.  Terms and conditions of payment are on the form.

Step 2:  Complete the on line health history form.

Step 3 (Optional):  If you think your son is going to stay at our overnight residence week, complete, have doctor sign, and return the Camper Health Care Recommendations. This form is required if your child is staying overnight at camp for more than 3 nights. Chincapin campers must have this form because of residence week.

Step 4: Read this General Information page about Red Barn. It includes information about bus service, pickup and drop times at camp, required equipment and clothing, cell phone policy, and other information about your camper's day.

Step 5: Bus Riders - read our Bus Rules, so you understand pick up and drop off procedure at the Temple.

Step 6:  Be sure that you bring your son out to the camp for a tour.  We will have several open houses, or you can contact the Executive Director, David Roskos, at redoakcamp@redoakcamp.org to schedule an individual tour.

THANKS!
