Program Overview

Chincapin is for girls ages 8 to 12, and offers a full camp experience, from riding lessons and barn management to climbing and backpacking.  The girls have a separate facility located on the corner of Little Mountain and Mentor Road in Kirtland Hills, with a pool, activity center, barn, riding rings, archery and rifle range, playing field, tennis court and trails.  In addition, the girls also have time to enjoy the facilities at Red Oak, including the challenge course and lake.

During this seven-week program, the Chincapin campers receive riding and horse care lessons and stable management 4 days a week. Chincapin's instruction focuses on safety, an appreciation of the sport, good riding form, and care for the animals.

Like Red Barn, the girls plan their own day, choosing from available activities, which include challenge course, swimming, canoe lessons, tennis, hiking, nature study, crafts, archery, and riflery. The girls benefit from instruction from a very experienced staff - many of our counselors are teachers and former campers who return to Chincapin year after year. Our camper to staff ratio is about 6:1.

The Chincapin experience culminates in a one-week residence stay at Red Oak.  The residence camp is included in the tuition.  The girls stay in cabins, learn about Kitchen Patrol, enjoy use of Red Oak's challenge course and lake, and night swimming at the lighted Corning Pool.
